Michael Lee McDaniel is a well-known American football coach who overcame a difficult childhood to become one of the most sought-after head coaches in the country.

Born on March 6, 1983, in Aurora, Colorado, a single mother raised him after his dad and the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, died in a car crash when he was four.

His childhood was challenging. After his father’s death, his mother struggled to provide for him. They also faced racism and segregation from his mother’s family and other members of the community because his father was black and his mother white.

His biracial background subjected him to discrimination as a child. McDaniel said his friends were often not allowed to stay overnight at his home. He initially had no idea why, but after confronting his mother, she finally told him.

McDaniel shared that he first became aware of his differences at the age of five, during a visit to his paternal grandmother’s house. While looking at family photos, he noticed that his skin tone was much lighter than everyone else’s in the pictures.

Mike McDaniel played wide receiver at Yale University, where he excelled both on the field and in the classroom, earning a degree in history after graduating from high school.

Coaching career

Mike McDaniel has had a successful career so far. He is currently in his 18th year coaching in the National Football League, having worked with ten different teams throughout his career.

A notable achievement was leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl final in 2019. Although his team lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, McDaniel earned the admiration of both his players and fans.

He began his coaching career with the Denver Broncos as an intern in 2005. The Broncos in the same year finished with their best record since John Elway’s retirement six years earlier, at 13–3.

In 2006, he took his first major role with the Houston Texans as an offensive assistant under head coach Gary Kubiak, whom McDaniel worked alongside at the Denver Broncos a season earlier.

In 2009, he joined the California Redwood as a running backs coach under former Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green.

In his second year with the team, McDaniel experienced a significant change as the franchise moved to Sacramento and became known as the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

In 2011, he joined the Washington Redskins as an offensive assistant, marking a reunion with head coach Mike Shanahan, who had mentored him six years earlier with the Denver Broncos.

By 2013, McDaniel earned a promotion to wide receivers coach after Ike Hilliard left to take on the same role with the Buffalo Bills. However, he was fired when Jay Gruden took over as head coach.

The following year, McDaniel joined the Cleveland Browns as wide receivers coach before moving to the Atlanta Falcons as an offensive assistant in 2015.

In 2017, McDaniel joined the San Francisco 49ers as their run game coordinator under his long-time associate and new head coach Kyle Shanahan, whom he worked alongside for nine seasons on the Browns, Falcons, Texans, and Redskins.

In the 2019 season, McDaniel and the 49ers reached Super Bowl LIV but were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 31–20.

On January 18, 2021, he was elevated to the role of offensive coordinator after Mike LaFleur, the passing game coordinator, left to take the same position with the New York Jets.

McDaniel joined the Miami Dolphins as head coach on February 6, 2022.

Achievements with the Dolphins

Mike McDaniel kicked off his tenure as head coach on September 11, 2022, leading the Miami Dolphins to a 20-7 win over the New England Patriots.

This not only made him the first Dolphins head coach since Nick Saban in 2005 to win his debut but also marked the first time in history that a rookie head coach won a season opener.

That victory also included Miami’s first win over the Buffalo Bills since 2018.

Under McDaniel’s leadership, the Dolphins finished the 2022 season with a 9–8 record, earning their first playoff appearance since 2016. However, their postseason run ended in a 34–31 loss to the Bills in the Wild Card Round, despite a strong fourth-quarter comeback.

In 2023, McDaniel led the Dolphins to a historic 70–20 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 3, the largest margin of victory in the Super Bowl era.
