The Kenyan government, through the National Transport and Safety Authority, introduced new digital number plates on August 30, 2022, in a bid to enhance security and reduce crime.

The new digital number plates are integrated with the systems of the Kenya Revenue Authority to allow for the real-time identification of tax evaders and defaulters.

Some of the security features the digital plates are loaded with include a hologram that can be easily scanned and a serial number matching the chassis number of the vehicle.

This information is also linked to the current owner of the vehicle.

Cars that have been newly imported come fitted with the new plates, however, vehicles with the older plate models will be required to apply for the new plates within 18 months.
