A valid driving licence is necessary to operate a vehicle in Kenya. You must have a current licence that verifies your qualifications and the type of vehicle you are authorized to drive.

In April 2018, NTSA introduced the new generation driving licence, which resembles a national identity card. This licence contains a secure computer chip that holds the motorist’s information, accessible only by NTSA officials using specialised gadgets.

Ways to confirm your licence validity

1. eCitizen Driving Licence Check

  • Log in to your eCitizen account.
  • Go to NTSA services.
  • Check if your driver’s licence (DL) is listed under the section.
  • Verify if the details displayed match those on your licence.

2. NTSA Driving Licence Checker App

  • Install the NTSA app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
  • Open the app and register an account.
  • If you already have an account, log in.
  • Click on the “Driving License Verification” tab.
  • Enter your national ID number and click “Verify”.
  • Verify the validity of your DL based on the information shown on the screen.

3. Using an SMS Code

  • Send your national ID number to 22846.
  • NTSA will reply to confirm the validity of your driving licence.

How to Apply for the Smart Driving Licence

NTSA has transitioned from manual licences to the new smart driver’s licence, which will soon replace the older versions.

Motorists are encouraged to apply for a smart driver’s licence to avoid penalties. The smart driving licence remains valid for three years.

  • Log into your eCitizen account and click Driving Licence within NTSA services.
  • Click “Apply Smart DL” and verify the details.
  • Request corrections if necessary, as data will be updated during the biometric capturing process.
  • Make the required payment and submit your application.
  • Choose any available date at your nearest Huduma Centre.
  • Present your original ID card for verification and identification.

How to Check the Status of Your DL

With the advancement of technology, NTSA offers services that allow you to easily check the status of your driver’s licence without waiting in long queues. Here’s how:

Via eCitizen:

  • Visit the eCitizen portal and log in.
  • Select the NTSA tab.
  • Click on “Check Status.”
  • A notification will confirm whether your DL is ready.

Via USSD:

  • Text your ID number (e.g., DL 221875811) to 22846.
  • A text message will be sent to your number with your application status.

  • Have passed a competency test for the specific vehicle class and hold a certificate of competence.
  • Hold a valid driving permit for the class of vehicle issued by a credible authority in a Commonwealth country.
